DEAD SUMMER BANDS
THE FLYTRAPS
The Flytraps is a Southern Californian, all-female band lodged somewhere between psychedelic rock and edgy surf rock. Implementing lots of guitar tremolo, sustained drumming, and simple guitar riffs over those two elements, The Flytraps’ songs conjure up scenes from a Quentin Tarantino film – think the opening credits to a Death Proof. Like, music in the vein of Jack Nitzsche, but with girls. The front woman sports some serious pipes on a few of their harder tracks and since some talented lady musicians back her, the sum total of The Flytraps is nothing short of awesome/rad/brilliant. Expect to be hypnotized at first listen. –Monica Hunt
PULSE OUT
Pulse Out hails from Manhattan Beach, a popular Southern California destination for surfers and a place soaked with that quintessential beach city vibe. You can hear Pulse Out’s native environs contending for prominence in their sound: a blend of surf and punk rock with vocals that have been compared to those of Black Francis from the Pixies. The music of Pulse Out manages to capture the two most revered aspects of SoCal music without being overly twee, and will make you reminiscent of bygone punk eras you were a part of or wish you could’ve experienced first-hand. THEE SOURCE OV FAWNATION
If names count for anything, then neither music nor spelling conventions can tame the unbridled creative energies of Thee Source ov Fawnation. The self-described “vocal electronic group” proffers seizure-inducing overlays of world percussion sounds, vocal loops, distorted-bass drones and strobe visuals that are as mesmerizing as they are jarring. The duo, which consists of Bryxan Amsterdam, Paer Svn and an endless supply of samples and loops, combines keyboard patterns, electronic samples, and vocal harmonies in aurally and visually enticing performances. Thee Source makes no effort to make its music accessible to the casual listener– it rewards total abandon to its convoluted sonic trappings, so don’t be surprised to find yourself in the throes of a spiritual revelry at their show. –Travis Barnes
LUNA IS HONEY
It’s hard to put a finger on Luna is Honey. This Los Angeles-based quintet knows how to smash together a bunch of weirdness and some how come out at the other end with something that has been described as organized chaos still palatable to the listener. It’s difficult to describe something so unique. But with songs entitled “Booty Call” and “Dripping Wet,” songs bursting with noise and regular ol’ guitar, Luna is Honey proves to be an experimental foray into modern sex exploits. The sheer creativity produced by Luna is Honey is a new frontier in modern music. –Monica Hunt
KILL KILL KILL
Bringing the noise to extra-terrestrial levels of weirdness this Saturday will be L.A. drone rockers Kill Kill Kill. Claiming origin in “the eye of the hosehead nebula,” the collective keeps performances fresh with regular trips into the unexpected by constantly rotating its ensemble and performing regular collaborations, such as a recent stint with Acid Mothers Temple. Their recent recording “From Beyond the Agave” captures the essence of Kill Kill Kill’s sprawling compositions, which often layer droning guitar and base over head-smashing drumming and even the occasional sax solo. Look forward to a live performance with wind-milling arms and a wall of noise that could as easily knock you on your ass as get your head bobbin’. –Travis Barnes
WMX
We’re looking forward to WMX of East LA to channel his dark and heavy vibes at Dead Summer with his driving industrial beats. Tracks like “Hunted” and “Suckface” yoke sparse MIDI melodies to heavily distorted bass lines that create a focused and uncluttered electronic soundscape. His relentlessly heavy percussive attack never overwhelms and constantly surprises– this music focuses on keeping your body moving with simple melodic and rhythmic ideas that slowly mutate into developed pieces that never lose their drive and focus. Expect it dark and mean during his sparse set on the Castle dance floor this Saturday. –Travis Barnes
