Welcome to a preview of our first crit cycle, a collaborative project which treads the line between art(s) and critique; a line we’re super interested in blurring. At which point does a critique of an object become a work of artistic merit in its own right? Here at DUM DUM, it’s what we bank on to get off, pay the bills, and bide our time while we experience as much art as we can get our hands on.
Issue 1 brings you “GO(D)TH,” an illustration by Pedro Juarez, which was made in response to a piece written by Taleen Kalenderian after listening to The Horror’s “Still Life” from their recent album “Skying.”
Not unlike their stateside comrades Abe Vigoda’s recent musical makeover, The Horrors have abandoned their erratic youth tributes for reckless abandon to ‘80s atmospheric aurals. More and more it seems bands are appealing to the Wild Nothing approach, wholly submitting to their predecessors in lieu of being simply trendy. The gorgeous results resonate like a sonically updated edition for our time and ours alone. With “Still Life’s” glimmering synths and slow-building hook–tinged with just the right amount of goth to retain their name–The Horrors have created something sure to be nostalgic for.
